Fitness Leadership Programs
The YMCA - YWCA of Winnipeg has a long history of encouraging individuals to assume responsibility for themselves and the welfare of others.
The YMCA developed the first nationally recognized Fitness Leadership Program in 1974, and has continued to train Fitness Leaders ever since.
In keeping with this history, we are continuously looking for new and dynamic volunteers to assist us as Fitness Leaders.
Stage One - Basic Theory
Basic Theory is the minimum prerequisite for all certification courses. Includes exercise science and general program development for all fitness professionals, coaches and/or avid participants. Course will discuss basic anatomy and physiology, exercise design, biomechanics, nutrition and more!
Stage Two - Applied Theory
Group Fitness
This course expands on fitness class leadership and includes such topics as class components, music, choreography and teaching techniques.
Aquatic Fitness
Fitness and water principles are the focus of this course. It includes safety, healthy lifestyle, fitness principles, research, exercise design and training guidelines. Participants will experience practical application of various types of aquatic resistance training equipment.
Individual Conditioning
For fitness professionals to design individual programs for the general population. Exercise physiology related to weight training, benefits and principles of strength training, session organization and safety guidelines are covered. Participants will experience practical application of free weights and various types of resistance training equipment.

Stage Three- Apprenticeship Program
To ensure candidates are comfortable, safe, informed and confident to run an enjoyable and safe program to members and the public, the YMCA - YWCA offers an Apprenticeship Program to assist new instructors with the transition from participant to teacher. Each specialty (Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness and Individual Conditioning) requires 12 hours of apprenticeship before evaluation and certification is completed.
